Fall is a great time for planting, and we couldn't wait to get started adding new trees and shrubs to the Sundogs landscape. While we are fortunate that the property already features a great diversity of native flora including hundreds of mature trees - in our opinion you can never have too many!
The fall landscape is enhanced by fields of broom sedge backed by hickories and oaks
Peggy took the opportunity to put her horticultural knowledge and love of native plants to work, designing new vignettes and vistas to enhance the drive leading to the residence. In keeping with our philosophy to support native flora and fauna biodiversity, the design features only regional natives. The selected plants were chosen for several reasons not the least of which were seasonal interest and wildlife support. On September 27th, we spent a lovely warm and dry day at Waynesboro Nursery, driving throughout their 1200 acres personally selecting and tagging all 98 of the new additions. When winter dormancy was established in November Waynesboro Nursery dug, prepared and delivered our selections.
To help us in this "little" project we enlisted the help of Justin Francis and his team at Cornerstone Lawn Services in Charles Towne, WV. The material was delivered via flatbed trailer to Cornerstone's facility on Tuesday November 14th in preparation for a scheduled planting the following Friday.
Planting day fortunately turned out to be a beautiful late fall day. The plant material was delivered to Sundogs by the Cornerstone team and we immediately got to work unloading and distributing the plants to the 9 designated planting areas. Utilizing lots of manpower and heavy equipment including augers and forklifts, the full day ended with all the plants installed as the long shadows began to creep across the landscape.
